Continuing with the theme of parents and children started by Duane Michals in the previous post, this image by Aneta Bartos really grabbed my attention. It raises so many questions. What exactly is the relationship between father and daughter here? Are we to believe its unseemly implications, or is it a conscious statement of the complicated relationships between fathers and daughters. And that it's a picture within a picture adds further complexity to the image, suggesting a labyrinth psychological depths. An altogether brilliant photograph.
Update: After writing the above, I went to look at her website. This is one of a series of photographs called Family Portrait. The entire series is about her and her father, and they are all suggestive of the psycho-sexual tensions that exist in father-daughter relationships. They are all staged and purposeful. She means to explore this territory in depth.
