I think I must have been a Japanese something in a former life. I am so attracted to the photographic work that emanates from the island nation. There is such a consistently poetic expression. An expression that is directly connected to the wellspring of preconscious motivations. The images may be of the "reality" of the world, but the presence of the window of the eyes of the photographer and their connection to things primal within seems always present in the work most memorable to me.
Nobuyoshi Araki is prolific. His work is often erotic, bordering on the pornograhic. His id written in profusion. This series of awkwardly composed still lifes includes images from a colonoscopy scan, sex toys, fetish dolls, sexy flowers, etc. It is a kind of expurgation, though the well from which the expurgated rises is vast and deep. The awkwardness of the compositions is expressive of a disquiet in the soul of the photographer ones suspects. Worth having a look.
